Tongue in cheek movies like these where filmmakers are winking at the audience can be a lot fun. The best example being the classic “Galaxy Quest,” or the “Jumanji” movies. But it’s a tough thing to pull off. You need a really smart script, the right mix of good actors who can play everything deadly serious and half decent production values. If you have the first two going for you, you can forgive cheesy production values but Max Reload fails on the crucial first two elements. When the writing isn’t smart and the actors play “funny” nothing funny at all so all you’re left with is cheesiness. Also, you know you’re in trouble when Greg Grunberg and his ever-expanding girth are one of the name actors in any film. His very presence assures the mediocrity will rule the day. This movie was a great movie to watch with some friends and having pizza! We loved this movie and it was super funny, there are some very well known actors and actors who seem to just be getting started on their career! Tom Plumley was great as MaxReload. Kevin Smith was super funny as always, as was Greg Grunberg! The movie had a nice 80s theme to it, and had moments where the movie was different types of video games. Very cool and new movie, almost like Jumanji but 2020 vibes.
