A Fall from Grace (2020)

Every year has a few films that come out on Netflix which everybody hates and I manage to find some enjoyment from. Last year, we had IO, Juanita, and a few others. Now, we have A Fall From Grace. That’s not to say that this is a great movie, or a particularly good one, but I did find some aspects to be quite compelling and I came away from it without any regrets for spending two hours of my life watching Tyler Perry’s new flick. The acting was great, especially from Bresha Webb as Jasmine and Crystal Fox as Grace. Most of the film takes place during the present day, when Grace is being questioned by Jasmine and during her murder trial. However, a large chunk of the movie delves into Grace’s background as to why she has been accused for the crime and that was, by far, my favourite part of the runtime. It all plays into what comes later, and I found myself invested in the rollercoaster journey of Grace’s life in recent years.

Unfortunately, there were a few narrative pitfalls which didn’t quite work for me and I found that the last act of the film was far too stretched out. If it has been cut down by about ten minutes, the pacing would have been much better and it would have hit me harder. The script in general wasn’t all that strong, but I have certainly seen worse. The ending also didn’t quite land for me, but it wasn’t terrible. I was just left with a couple of questions which I felt like they should have addressed.
