Boyhood (2014)

Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater‘s BOYHOOD is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason’s parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay’s Yellow to Arcade Fire’s Deep Blue. BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting.

Anyone who has seen any work from Richard Linklater knows what kind of a filmmaker he is. He waited between years to complete his "Before" trilogy and with Boyhood he has gone a step further and actually filmed the actor in real time. The real time extent here is a staggering 18 years and the coming of age aspect is enhanced by this fact alone. Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette play the parents of the lead and the young actors, especially Ellar Coltrane is exceptional. This is a must watch for all cinema lovers.

After watching I am now 500% sure that every single critic who reviewed this film was either paid off or is legally brain dead. THe only thing anyone cares about is that this movie took 12 years to make and we get to watch a kid grow up. That is all there is to the movie. Literally (as in the actual definition) no story, no conflict, no character development, no one actually does anything at all. You could get a better movie experience from a person leaving their webcam on for a day by accident. I'd rather watch a marathon of adam sandler films than this ever again.

In what is perhaps Richard Linklater's loftiest feature film feat to date, "Boyhood" not only represents a watershed moment in the on-going history of modern American filmmaking, but an enjoyable experience overall, chockfull of simple, yet captivating storytelling tactics, some terrific acting, and an immeasurable amount of thematic insight. The film's length is a bit unwieldy at times, but it also really helps drive home the epic weight of what's been accomplished here, and -- indeed -- the majesty of life itself. Life is far from perfect. In fact, much of life includes suffering, hardship, undue change, and an endless study of "what might have been." But if I'm hearing the movie's message right, it's important to take all of that in stride and to focus more on the present moment, keeping hopeful for what might be in store for us all down the pike.
