I was privileged to watch this film at the recent Raindance festival in London. Knowing this is an independent film, funded with determination, dedication and conviction by Londoner Marc Zammit – making his directorial debut, and taking on the challenging lead role – I am counting the days before this remarkable film finds international distribution. Homelessness is a global issue, and everyone should see this film. I was extremely lucky to be able to see this film premiere at The Raindance Film Festival. What a stunning film. It was the whole package of brilliant writing, directing, acting and producing. The Ariel filming was amazing such an asset to the film. It made me cry, it made me think! It will stay with me forever. I will now look on homeless people in such a different way. It’s so true everyone has a story to tell. Zammit chose his cast with meticulous care, the performances of each and every one of them is haunting; from the sweeping score by Mark Wind to the magic of Richard Oakes’ cinematography, writer George Willcox’s dialogue transports you to a place you never want to go, and yet you become so invested in each character and each of their stories, you cannot fail to feel involved. I am not ashamed to say I cried….a lot. But more importantly, I no longer walk past a man or woman huddled in a doorway. From the breathtaking cinematography of Richard Oakes & the beautiful musical scoring of Mark Wind in the opening of the film, we know this will not only be a story of pain but also of beauty. Life can be painful, whether you live in a penthouse or on the streets. We are reminded that it’s not our circumstances that define us, but rather what we do with them that does. The power for me in this film, is that despite whatever hardship or heart wrenching pain Frankie experiences, he never loses his purity of spirit & sense of hope & beauty. Every box is ticked for me in this movie, from the powerfully raw yet beautiful story by George Wilcox, to the breathtaking cinematography of Richard Oakes, to the sublime scoring of Mark Wind. The casting is spot on, with impeccable performances by each actor. Seeing each character & relationship fleshed out by this insanely talented cast, is an absolute masterclass in itself. The only piece that doesn’t fit is the fact that this incredible film was not made by a studio & is not only a first time indie film by filmmaker Marc Zammit, in which he also brings the lead character Frankie to life, but it’s also his directorial debut! Color be gob smacked! This film, it’s Cast & Crew are clearly ones to watch! I was privileged to watch this film at the recent Raindance festival in London.
