It does an exceptionally good job for a film that is, essentially, about a man who refuses to defecate for almost 2 weeks, but there is only so much you can do with that premise. With an interesting 30 mins or so at the beginning as well as the end of the film, it does run out of interesting things to do or say during the middle act which leads to it feeling like the content was only there in order to extend the running time to an acceptable length for the studio. However, overall, it has to be said that it has a lot more fibre and is far better than you would expect from its description.

It's hard to believe this was written by the same person who wrote SAW and INSIDIOUS. Then again, when a script is developed into a Hollywood movie it goes through so many professional re-writes that it's mostly not the same script that was originally submitted. That being said, The Mule suffered the most amateur writing mistake: A Passive Protagonist. The Hero literally has no desire other than to not shit himself. That's his only goal in life. And that is why we end up with a film about some loser that gets kicked around in life and ends up on a hotel bed for 2 weeks trying not to shit his pants.

An intriguing Australian drama (some comedy, but not many laughs), but it was always going to be hard to keep the tension up when it's basically 100min of waiting for a man in a room to go to the toilet!
