Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made (2020)

Watched this with my kids (8 & 10) and we loved it. Between the great casting and acting from everyone (especially Flo) to the main character’s (Timmy Failure’s) hard boiled and dry delivery of almost every line, this movie is spot on. Settle in for a fun detective adventure that weaves the quirkiness of Portland with the absurdities of an unsupervised, intelligent kid’s imagination as he tries to solve his next case involving the class hamster, the “Russians”, and a Segway. I expected this movie to be silly. Instead, I ended up watching the last half without the kids and really enjoyed it. The whole movie is about how this poor kid deals with loss and abandonment. Seen through that lens, which kids will not get, it breaks your heart. But it makes it really impactful it when the various people in his life help him out. Overall I really enjoyed it but I think it is poorly marketed. Kids may laugh at his imagination but won’t understand what is going on.

Other than *one* curse word that was spoken at children for no good reason, and honestly didn’t even fit the scene, nothing is inappropriate for kids, just over their heads.

This movie was great fun and a breath of fresh air and nice change from the tired Star Wars and Marvel sequels, etc. that keep getting pumped out as well as the overdone remakes. The movie was funny, well acted and a joy to watch. Winslow Fegley, who plays the title role, was especially good in the part he played. I am just hoping they will continue with the series (in spite of what I said about sequels above). I highly recommend this film as well as the books it is based on.
